HC Deb 27 February 1939 vol 344 cc904-5
68. Mr. Viant

asked the Postmaster-General the amount of overtime worked by the engineers engaged in the telephone service of the London area during the months of September, October and November, 1938?

Sir W. Womersley

The number of hours of overtime worked in the London area during the three months referred to was: in September last, 104,503; in October last, 145,143; and in November last, 84,789.

Mr. Viant

Were there any exceptional circumstances to warrant the working of this extra overtime?

Sir W. Womersley

Yes, Sir. During September and October, owing to a certain crisis or emergency that arose, exceptional pressure was put upon our staff, and I want to say that they responded wholeheartedly to the request which my right hon. Friend the Post master-General made to them to do their best in that time of emergency.

Mr. Davidson

Was the response reflected in their pay bags?

Sir W. Womersley

It was reflected in their pay bags.
