HC Deb 22 February 1939 vol 344 cc360-1
17. Mr. G. Strauss

asked the Minister of Transport whether he will take steps to prohibit the use of neon or other illuminated advertisements on the back and sides of all road vehicles?

The Minister of Transport (Mr. Burgin)

I am not aware of any evidence which would justify action of the kind that the hon. Member has in mind.

Mr. Strauss

Is it not plain that if vans travelling along the streets are illuminated with neon signs they constitute a danger? Some of these vans exist. I have seen them myself. Will not the right hon. Gentleman take some action to prevent this in the future?

Mr. Burgin

I will certainly consider any information the hon. Member gives me, but in my answer I have said that I have no evidence which would justify my taking action.

Mr. Strauss

As there have been no accidents because the number of the vehicles is small, will not the right hon. Gentleman take action before the accidents occur?

Mr. Burgin

Nothing is clear without evidence. If the hon. Member will give me evidence I will look into it.
