HC Deb 21 February 1939 vol 344 cc192-3
41. Mr. Henderson Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland when the scheme for assisting the building of new herring boats will be published?

Mr. Colville

The schemes are nearing completion and they will be published at an early date.

42. Mr. Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether, in view of the increased costs of running and repairs of steam drifters, the State assistance given to foreign competitive vessels, and the fact that the recent Herring Industry Act afforded no direct assistance to this class of vessel and its crews, he will consider anew the proposal of the joint deputation, representing all sections of the herring industry, for a grant towards running expenses for drifters during the summer and autumn fishings?

Mr. Colville

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply on this subject given on 5th December last to the right hon. Member for Kirkcaldy Burghs (Mr. Kennedy) which indicated the reasons why such a grant could not be agreed to.

Mr. Stewart

Is the Secretary of State aware that herring drifters are now being subject to a Board of Trade survey, which will certainly involve a large expenditure by the owners, and, in view of this heavy additional cost, will he not reconsider the whole question?

Mr. Colville

I am afraid that I cannot undertake to do that in view of the recent legislation.
