HC Deb 20 February 1939 vol 344 cc21-2
34. Sir A. Knox

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether the Government pro pose to introduce a scheme to provide cheaper milk for mothers and young children?

Sir R. Dorman-Smith

As already announced, the Government hope to bring forward a scheme, in co-operation with the industry, for a reduction in the price of liquid milk to local authorities for the purpose of their maternity and child welfare arrangements. Negotiations have taken place to this end with the Milk Marketing Board and representatives of the distributors, but I am not yet in a position to state when the proposed scheme will be introduced.

Sir A. Knox

Is it not the fact that a sum of £250,000 was allotted to this scheme in the late Milk Bill, and is that to be supplemented?

Sir R. Dorman-Smith

The hon. and gallant Member will realise that it is the late Milk Bill, and that we are considering it again.
