HC Deb 20 February 1939 vol 344 cc14-5
20. Mr. A. Henderson

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the present trading relations between Italy, Saudi Arabia and the Yemen, His Majesty's Government are satisfied that the provisions of the Anglo-Italian Agreement, whereby the Italian Government undertook not to secure political advantage in Saudi Arabia and the Yemen, are being observed?

Mr. Butler

Yes, Sir.

26. Mr. G. Strauss

asked the Prime Minister whether he is aware that supplies of arms are being sent by Italy to Imam Yahya, Ruler of the Yemen, in return for which Italy is being given a measure of control over a number of strategically important islands; and, as this conflicts with Article 2 of the Anglo-Italian Agreement, which prohibits either parties from obtaining a privileged position of a political character in any territory belonging to the Yemen, what action does His Majesty's Government propose to take?

Mr. Butler

My Noble Friend's reports do not show that the Italian Government have been given any control of any islands or that they have taken any action which would conflict with Article 2 of the Anglo-Italian Agreement.

Mr. Strauss

Have the Government any information in regard to alleged imports of large quantities of arms from Italy in Hodeida on the Red Sea, in German and Japanese boats?

Mr. Butler

No, Sir, but if the hon. Member has any information which he would like me to study, I shall be glad to study it.

Mr. Gallacher

Do you know anything at all about anything?
