HC Deb 20 February 1939 vol 344 cc22-3
36. Mr. De la Bére

asked the Minister of Agriculture what steps he is taking to maintain the pig population, in view of the threatened decrease?

Sir R. Dorman-Smith

I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply given on 16th February to my hon. and gallant Friend the Member for Howdenshire (Major Carver). I would add that the latest information available does not suggest the likelihood of any further decrease in the pig population in the immediate future; on the contrary, the decline in breeding stock appears to have been arrested.

Mr. De la Bère

Is it not the fact that the decrease is largely due to the cumbersome, expensive and restrictive regulations to which the bacon industry is subjected; and does not my right hon. and gallant Friend realise that these schemes are bound to fail unless some drastic alterations are made?
