HC Deb 16 February 1939 vol 343 c1879
6. Mr. Petherick

asked the Minister of Labour how many immigrants from Germany and Austria who have entered this country during the last two years to the latest convenient date are now employed in this country in domestic service; and how many are employed otherwise than in domestic service?

Mr. E. Brown

I regret that this information is not available. If, however, my hon. Friend wishes, I can send him the number of permits issued by the Ministry of Labour.

Mr. Petherick

Can the right hon. Gentleman say into what classes of employment these girls have gone?

Mr. E. Brown

I could give the hon. Member the information in regard to categories, but not in respect of individual cases.

Mr. Mander

Is it the case that most of these girls have gone back to Germany now?

Mr. E. Brown

I should like to have notice of that question. I have seen statements to that effect, but the point has not been put to me. If the hon. Member will put down the question I will get the information.

Lieut.-Colonel Sir A. Lambert Ward

Is it not a fact that a large number are refusing to go back?
