HC Deb 16 February 1939 vol 343 cc1898-9
45. Mr. Vyvyan Adams

asked the Prime Minister whether he is aware that official circles in France would be greatly reassured if our physical ability to join in the defence of the territories of the Western democracies were more evident; and whether, to convey such an assurance, he will consider declaring at an early date the intention of His Majesty's Government forthwith to increase the size of the British Army?

The Prime Minister (Mr. Chamberlain)

I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer which I gave to his question on Thursday last, to which I have nothing to add.

Mr. Adams

Would not a statement prior to the Estimate be of value? In an emergency, could the French be reasonably expected to hold the fort for months while we are preparing to put out our maximum effort?

The Prime Minister

Perhaps my hon. Friend would like to debate that on the Estimate?

Mr. Hannah

May we have some assurance that we shall not again be guilty of the folly of sending troops to the mainland of Europe?
