§ 59. Mr. George Griffithsasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he can make any statement on the reception given by the parties concerned to the awards of the arbitration tribunal set up in connection with the dispute in the Trinidad oilfields?
Mr. M. MacDonaldThe tribunal was unable to agree, and the award was made by the chairman in accordance with Section 3 (2) (c) of the Trade Disputes (Arbitration and Inquiry) Ordinance. I understand that both parties have expressed dissatisfaction with the award, but have accepted it in the same spirit 1719 which prompted them to refer their differences to arbitration for settlement.
§ Mr. GriffithsAre they always carrying out the award about paying the workers?
§ Mr. GriffithsI asked whether they are—not whether they will.
Mr. MacDonaldThe award consisted of two parts, one of which was retrospective for 12 months. I have no doubt that that will be carried out as rapidly as possible. The other part applied to future payments. I have no doubt also that they will carry that out. They accepted both parts of the award.
§ Mr. GriffithsIf I put a question down later, will the right hon. Gentleman give me a definite answer that this is being done?
