HC Deb 15 February 1939 vol 343 cc1719-20
60. Mr. Parker

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that there is a strong demand for self-government in Cyprus; and what steps he is taking to make this island a contented colony?

Mr. M. MacDonald

As I said in reply to questions by the hon. Member for West Fife (Mr. Gallacher) and the hon. Member for Shipley (Mr. Creech Jones) on 8th February, the Government's policy is to develop the participation of the people in their own government in the first instance through the district and municipal councils. I cannot add anything to that statement at present.

Captain Graham

Is it not a fact that what discontent there is is confined to a few ex-politicians out of jobs?

Mr. Pritt

Is it not confined to all the Greeks on the island and a few of the Turks?
