HC Deb 15 February 1939 vol 343 c1707
35. Mr. Perkins

asked the Secretary of State for Air whether it is proposed to manufacture aero-engines in Canada as well as air frames?

Sir K. Wood

The question whether arrangements should be made for the manufacture in Canada of aero-engines for the Royal Air Force has received careful consideration and it has been decided that, in present circumstances, it is not necessary for the United Kingdom Government to initiate steps with a view to the creation of capacity for that purpose.

Mr. Perkins

Do I understand that the right hon. Gentleman proposes to buy aero-engines from America for British aircraft?

Sir K. Wood

No, Sir. Engines required for aircraft manufactured in peace time to the order of the United Kingdom Government will be British made from materials supplied from this country.
