HC Deb 02 February 1939 vol 343 cc340-1
4. Mr. Malcolm MacMillan

asked the Minister of Labour how many unemployed men were sent during the past year from Stornoway Employment Exchange to road work on the mainland?

Mr. E. Brown

During the past year, 144 men were placed in road employment on the mainland by the Stornoway Employment Exchange. In addition, five men were placed in such work in the Isle of Skye.

Mr. MacMillan

In view of the great deal of road work that remains to be done in these islands, would the right hon. Gentleman make representations to the Minister of Transport and to the county council in order to get the work done there before exporting the workers to the mainland?

Mr. Brown

The hon. Member is making a rather large assertion. I suggest that he applies first of all to the county council, since he appears to be in possession of all the facts.
