HC Deb 13 December 1939 vol 355 cc1206-7
77. Mr. R. Gibson

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster whether, in view of the increased and still rising costs, he will, in the interests of consumers, institute a control of yeast?

Mr. W. S. Morrison

An undertaking has been given by manufacturers that the price of yeast will not be raised without reference to the Ministry of Food. In accordance with this undertaking, small increases in the prices of the lowest grades have been notified, but they are not such as to justify the introduction of control.

Mr. Gibson

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that, following on a suggestion from his Department, a meeting of manufacturers in this business was convened for to-morrow, but that the large financial interest in that trade has peremptorily refused to attend, and will he deal with the matter because it is becoming apparent that the large financial interest is determined to use the war emergency to crush the smaller manufacturers?

Mr. Morrison

I will gladly go into any information which the hon. Member can give to me.
