HC Deb 07 December 1939 vol 355 c822
91. Mr. R. C. Morrison

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the amount of Savings Certificates and Defence Bonds purchased to date?

Sir J. Simon

The House will appreciate that it is not easy to give precise figures to date, since the new issues are on sale at thousands of banks and post offices all over the country. I am glad to say, however, that the response of the small investor to the offer continues to be very gratifying. Down to Tuesday the Savings Certificates known to have been applied for were 13,250,000 units, representing a sum of £10,000,000. Not allowing for applications in transit the sales of Defence Bonds to yesterday were £11,226,370.
