HC Deb 03 August 1939 vol 350 cc2608-9
41. Mr. Day

asked the Home Secretary the amount expended in the provision, maintenance, and running of the motor vehicles used by the traffic patrols of the Metropolitan Police for the 12 months ended the last convenient date; and the amount expended on the special uniforms worn by the driver and crew over and above the cost of ordinary uniforms?

Sir S. Hoare

The provision, maintenance and running of the motor vehicles used by the traffic patrols of the Metropolitan Police for the 12 months ended 31st December, 1938, cost £50,670, and the special uniforms worn by the drivers and crews involved an expenditure of approximately £2,300 more than the cost of ordinary uniforms.

Mr. Day

Can the Minister say whether any portion of the £423,695 which motorists have been fined, according to a White Paper, was allocated to meet this expenditure?

Sir S. Hoare

I am not sure to what figure the hon. Member is referring.

Mr. Day

Is the Minister aware that a White Paper, circulated by the Vote Office and entitled "Offences Relating to Motor Vehicles," shows that the amount in which motorists have been fined during the last year is £423,695 5s. 3d.?

Sir S. Hoare

A great many figures are published in these Home Office White Papers, and I would call the hon. Member's attention to the fact that he did not use that figure in his question. I have answered his question.

Sir Herbert Williams

What proportion of these fines was collected on Rolls-Royce cars?
