HC Deb 27 April 1939 vol 346 cc1315-6
70. Mr. White

asked the Minister of Health by whom the work of compiling the National Register will be carried out; and by whom the personnel will be recruited?

Mr. Elliot

The complete National Register, the preparations for which by means of the census organisation have been undertaken in accordance with the announcement made by my right hon. Friend the Lord Privy Seal in December last, will be compiled, when the necessity arises, by the Registrar-General. The engagement of the requisite enumerators has been entrusted to local officers appointed by the Registrar-General, and this is now nearly completed.

Mr. White

Will it be possible to engage any unemployed people for this work?

Mr. Elliot

I have no doubt that a number of unemployed persons will be engaged.

Mr. Maxton

Will it be spare-time employment for persons already employed, or will it be a full-time occupation during the period?

Mr. Elliot

I could not say off-hand, but I think it is a spare-time occupation.
