HC Deb 27 April 1939 vol 346 c1291
5. Miss Ward

asked the Minister of Labour how many speakers were available for the National Service campaign as a result of his appeal; and how many meetings have been held since the National Service meeting at Montagu House?

Mr. E. Brown

As a result of my appeal for a central reserve of speakers, 374 offers have been received. These are additional to the large number of speakers whose services are available locally to the National Service committees. Many meetings have been held and are being held of which I have no precise statistical record. As regards what may be described as larger meetings, 24 have been held since 28th March and 22 others are about to be held.

Miss Ward

Is it not possible to hold public meetings right throughout the country?

Mr. Brown

The answer is that it would be unnecessary. In many parts of the country there is overwhelming evidence that the National Service campaign is succeeding. There are areas where there is a surplus in all the services.

Miss Ward

Is the right hon. Gentleman not aware that people like to have meetings even if they have volunteered? That is the point.

Mr. Brown

While I realise that point, my view is that the most urgent need is to hold meetings in the areas where there is a deficiency.

Miss Ward

Cannot we all go there?
