HC Deb 27 April 1939 vol 346 cc1306-7
48. Mr. Boothby

asked the Prime Minister whether he is satisfied with the arrangement at present proposed for the use of His Majesty's Ship "Repulse"?

The Prime Minister

On further consideration it has been thought preferable that "Repulse" should not leave European waters. Arrangements have, therefore, already been made that a liner should be available, and it has now been decided that His Majesty should proceed to Canada in Royal Mail Steamer "Empress of Australia."

Mr. Boothby

May we take it that the "Empress of Australia" will have an escort of warships?

The Prime Minister

Oh, yes, Sir.

Commander Marsden

Cannot the Prime Minister endeavour to get a liner which has been built in British shipyards and not one of German construction?

The Prime Minister

In the circumstances we had to take what liner was available, and I hope it may be some consolation to my hon. and gallant Friend to know that the engines of this ship were built in Glasgow.

Commander Sir Archibald Southby

Will the ship be manned by naval ratings or by men of the Merchant Service?
