HC Deb 26 April 1939 vol 346 c1134
41. Mr. Assheton

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he can make any statement regarding the gift of £1,000,000 by the Straits Settlements to His Majesty's Government towards the cost of Empire Defence?

Mr. M. MacDonald

The Governor has informed me that the Legislative Council of the Straits Settlements has passed a resolution, on the initiative of the Unofficial Members, offering a gift of £1,000,000 to His Majesty's Government towards the cost of the general defence of the British Empire. I have requested the Governor to express to the Council the grateful acceptance by His Majesty's Government of this very generous gift and their warm appreciation of the sustained and practical co-operation of the Colony in the costly burden of Empire Defence, of which this gift is yet another example.
