HC Deb 05 April 1939 vol 345 c2786
70. Mr. F. Anderson

asked the Home Secretary whether his attention has been called to the collapse of the grandstand at Rochdale on 1st April, 1939, on the occasion of the Rugby League cup semi final, when one man was killed and many others were injured and taken to hospital; whether he can state the cause of the accident; and whether he will take steps to see that all such stands are regularly inspected, certified to be safe, and over crowding not allowed?

Sir S. Hoare

I have obtained a report from the Chief Constable of Rochdale; I understand that the inquest on the deceased was opened yesterday and adjourned to 18th April, and after the inquest has been concluded I will obtain further reports and consider whether there is any action that I can take.
