HC Deb 05 April 1939 vol 345 c2764
28. Mr. A. Edwards

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty whether he will reconsider the decision to provide for oil-firing of the new Royal yacht; and to arrange for British coal to be used for this purpose?

Mr. Shakespeare

The ship and yacht builders who have received a statement of requirements on which to base their preliminary designs are at liberty to propose a coal-burning ship if they think that such a vessel can meet the required conditions within reasonable dimensions and price. While the Admiralty would certainly give consideration to any such proposal, I should mention that the well-known objections to coal as a fuel for yachts are applicable to this vessel.
