HC Deb 04 April 1939 vol 345 cc2590-1
4. Sir Douglas Thomson

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether he will consult with the Governor of Newfoundland regarding the re-institution of a Naval Reserve unit in Newfoundland?

Sir T. Inskip

Proposals with this object in view have been discussed with the Admiralty and the Commission of Government on several occasions during the last few years, but so far they have not been found practicable. Apart from other difficulties it has been felt that, in view of the high cost involved, other measures requiring financial assistance in Newfoundland must take precedence. Advantage is, however, being taken of the presence in this country of the Governor of Newfoundland to discuss the matter further with him.

Sir D. Thomson

Will my right hon. Friend bear in mind that the people who would be assisting in this are the fishing population in Newfoundland who are very hardly hit at the present time?

Sir T. Inskip

Yes, Sir, I will certainly bear that in mind.
