HC Deb 04 April 1939 vol 345 c2593
10. Mr. Tomlinson

asked the President of the Board of Trade what action he proposes to take now with respect to the Anglo-Indian Trade Agreement, in view of its rejection by the Legislative Assembly?

Mr. Stanley

The rejection by the Indian Legislative Assembly of the motion which invited them to approve the Agreement does not preclude the Government of India from giving effect to it. I understand that they propose to do so, and that a Bill for that purpose was introduced in the Assembly on Friday last.

Mr. Tomlinson

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether this action of the Legislative Assembly is likely to militate against smooth working?

Mr. Stanley

That is a matter of opinion.
