HC Deb 03 April 1939 vol 345 cc2430-1
10. Mr. A. Henderson

asked the Prime Minister whether it is the policy of His Majesty's Government that the Egyptian Government shall be consulted, and its approval obtained, in respect of any agreement affecting the Suez Canal, its dues or administration, which may be reached between the British, French, and Italian Governments?

The Prime Minister

As I informed the hon. and learned Member on 19th December, the status of the Suez Canal cannot be altered without the consent of the parties to the Suez Canal Convention of 1888 and of Egypt. The administration of the Company and the level of dues are matters within the control of the Company, on the board of which the Egyptian Government is represented by two directors. If, however, any intergovernmental conversations should take place regarding these matters, the Egyptian Government, as the territorial Power concerned, would certainly be invited to participate.

Mr. Thorne

Has there been any demand made by Italy for seats on the Suez Canal board?

The Prime Minister

We have not received any such demand.
