HC Deb 06 October 1938 vol 339 cc461-2
9. Mr. Mander

asked the Minister of Transport the present position with regard to the building of a new bridge over the canal in Deans Road, Wolverhampton; whether he is aware of the inconvenience caused by the present narrow and inconvenient structure; and how soon action is likely to be taken?

The Minister of Transport (Mr. Burgin)

The answer to the question depends more on the attitude of the Wolverhampton Corporation than upon anything which my Department can do. The facts are these: The building of a new bridge over the canal in Deans Road, Wolverhampton, is part of a larger Wolverhampton Corporation scheme for a proposed new road between Old Heath Road and Church Street. I understand that the agreement between the corporation and the canal company is now ready for completion and I have already approved the engineering details. The land necessary for carrying out the project has not yet been acquired by the corporation. As soon as the corporation communicate with me again I will give their requests immediate attention.

Mr. Mander

This busy thoroughfare has only a single track bridge on which it is impossible to see, from one side to the other, what is coming, and will the Minister, therefore, use his good offices with those concerned to try to expedite the matter?
