HC Deb 29 November 1938 vol 342 cc218-9
13. Mr. Boothby

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will set up an immediate inquiry into the position of those farmers in Scotland who, by reason of the fact that they are unable to grow wheat, are unable to obtain a remunerative price for their cereal crop?

Mr. Colville

As I indicated in reply to my hon. Friend's question on 22nd November, my right hon. Friend the Minister of Agriculture and I have the position of the growers of oats and barley under consideration. I do not think that any useful purpose would be served by instituting a special inquiry such as my hon. Friend suggests.

Mr. Boothby

Will my right hon. Friend be in a position to make a statement on the policy of the Government before the Christmas Recess?

Mr. Colville

I cannot say, but I have been asked to meet representatives of the Scottish Farmers' Union and Chamber of Agriculture next week, and we shall be going into the matter then.
