HC Deb 21 November 1938 vol 341 cc1345-6
70. Mr. Thorne

asked the First Commissioner of Works whether he will consider the flood-lighting of the Cenotaph, in view of the large number of people who desire to make pilgrimage to this national memorial, especially at this time of the year?

Sir P. Sassoon

At the time of its erection, four standard lamps were sited on the pavements in the neighbourhood of the Cenotaph in such a way that always and at all seasons it is abundantly lighted. I have grave doubts as to whether the actual flood-lighting of it would be an innovation which would be either desirable or would commend itself generally; and, owing to the position of the Cenotaph in the midst of busy traffic streams, this would, in any case, prevent considerable technical difficulties.

Mr. Kirby

Is my right hon. Friend aware that the flood-lighting of the Cenotaph in Liverpool has been quite successful?
