HC Deb 17 November 1938 vol 341 cc1052-3
62. Mr. Westwood

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education the names of the authorities who have received grants for the construction of swimming baths under the Physical Training and Recreation Act, 1937, giving the amount of grant made to each authority, respectively?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education (Mr. Kenneth Lindsay)

Grant aid under the Physical Training and Recreation Act has been offered in respect of 45 proposals of local authorities for the provision of new swimming baths (in one case two baths) and in respect of 14 proposals of local authorities for the enlargement and improvement of existing swimming baths. In addition, 23 proposals for the provision of new baths (two baths in each of two cases) and six proposals for the improvement of existing baths are under consideration. I am sending the hon. Member a list of the local authorities concerned. I am unable to give the amount of grant in each case, inasmuch as in some instances this depends upon the final settlement of the plans. The total amount of expenditure involved in the proposals in respect of which grants have been offered is in the region of £1,000,000.

Mr. Westwood

Is there any difficulty on the part of the English authorities when grants are approved of getting the grants from the Treasury, as happens to be the position in Scotland?

Mr. Lindsay

Not that I am aware of.

Mr. G. Griffiths

Will the Minister have a list of the local authorities printed in the OFFICIAL REPORT?

Mr. Lindsay

I will see that the hon. Gentleman gets it.
