HC Deb 17 November 1938 vol 341 c1048
49. Mr. Cary

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of the restriction of Jewish emigration to Palestine, he will consider the advisability of giving Jews special facilities of entering and settling in Tanganyika; and will he approach the South African Government and the French Government with a view to similar privileges being extended to include South-West Africa and the Cameroons?

The Prime Minister

The possibility of the settlement of refugees from Germany has been taken up with a number of Colonial Governors, including the Governor of Tanganyika. The matter is being treated as one of urgency, and I hope to be able to make a statement at the beginning of next week. As regards the latter part of the question, I stated on 14th November, in reply to similar questions, that the problem of emigration from Germany is before the inter-Governmental Committee set up as a result of the Evian Meeting. The question of an approach to the Governments referred to by my hon. Friend is, therefore, a matter for consideration by the Committee in the first instance.
