HC Deb 17 November 1938 vol 341 cc1044-5
45. Mr. Malcolm MacMillan

asked the Prime Minister whether he will cause a special inquiry to be made into the Scottish defence position?

The Prime Minister (Mr. Chamberlain)

I would refer the hon. Member to the answer given on 29th June last by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Air to a question put to him by the hon. Member for Maryhill (Mr. Davidson). The defence of Scotland is an integral and essential part of the defence of the United Kingdom as a whole, which is under continuous review. A special inquiry of the kind suggested would, therefore, serve no useful purpose.

Mr. MacMillan

In view of the fact that information has shown that the defence of Scotland has been anything but adequate, surely there is a case for a special inquiry being made into the defence of Scotland as such?

The Prime Minister

I do not accept that view.
