asked the Prime Minister whether any reply has been received from the German Government to the protest made on behalf of His Majesty's Government following the attacks on the Leader of the Opposition and other Members of this House?

Sir J. Simon

No, Sir, but I understand that the German Minister for Propaganda has stated to the correspondent of Reuter's Agency that he did not approve of the publication of the statements in question by the newspaper concerned, and that he would have the mistake immediately cleared up.

Mr. Henderson

Will the right hon. Gentleman assure the House that His Majesty's Government will not be content with an explanation given to a newspaper correspondent?

Sir J. Simon

The hon. Gentleman will have in mind that the communication was made only on Monday and that when it was made the Minister responsible was not in Berlin.

Mr. Mander

Is it not a fact that these attacks have enormously sent up the prestige in this country of the hon. Members attacked?
