§ 43. Mr. Westwoodasked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether his attention has been drawn to the report of the Inspector of Weights and Measures of Angus with reference to the samples of lime, as supplied to the Angus farmers, which he had analysed; and what action does he propose to safeguard both the State and the farmers from future exploitation and fraud?
§ Mr. ColvilleI have seen a reference in the Press to the report referred to, a copy of which, I understand, is to be sent to my Department. In the meantime, I am assured that the quality of the lime supplied under the land fertility scheme is receiving the constant attention of the Land Fertility Committee, which is the statutory authority responsible for the operation of the scheme.
§ Mr. WestwoodIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that the alleged lime supplied was guaranteed to contain 90 per cent. of calcium oxide, and that when two samples were analysed by the inspector of weights and measure, one was found to be 14.84 per cent. deficient and the other 78.42 per cent. deficient, which means the fraudulent sale of material at 680 the expense of the State and the farmers?
§ Mr. ColvilleIf the hon. Member's facts are correct, it sounds like a very bad consignment, but I had better wait for the report.
§ Mr. WestwoodWill the right hon. Gentleman be prepared to discuss with me the facts that are at my disposal, provided by county councils in England and Scotland, demanding new legislation to safeguard farmers from this exploitation?
§ Mr. ColvilleThe hon. Member is now raising a larger question. As regards the original question, I must be allowed to see the report, which has not yet reached me.
§ Mr. WestwoodWill the right hon. Gentleman discuss the facts with me?
§ Mr. ColvilleYes, Sir.
§ Captain W. T. ShawWill my right hon. Friend see that no subsidy is paid in connection with inferior material?
