HC Deb 15 November 1938 vol 341 c655
2. Mr. Creech Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether he has any statement to make regarding the relations of the High Commission Territories to the Union of South Africa?

The Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs (Mr. Malcolm MacDonald)

As my predecessor explained in reply to the hon. Member's question on 28th July, the Joint Advisory Conference which has been set up held a preliminary meeting on 6th May, when it was arranged that the study of openings for closer co-operation between the Territories and the Union would be undertaken at the next meeting to be held after members of the conference had visited the Territories. Visits to Swaziland and the Bechuanaland Protectorate are now taking place.

Mr. Creech Jones

Can the Minister say whether the subject of the transfer of the Protectorates will be discussed with Mr. Pirow during his visit to Europe?

Mr. MacDonald

It is not specifically on the agenda. I think it has been mentioned once or twice in conversation, but the procedure is according to the answer to this question.
