HC Deb 14 November 1938 vol 341 cc478-9
14. Mr. A. Henderson

asked the Prime Minister what reply has been given to the protest made by the Russian Ambassador against the statement recently made by the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster to the effect that Russia had not offered help in the Czechoslovak crisis?

The Prime Minister

I would refer the hon. Member to my reply to the hon. Members for West Fife (Mr. Gallacher), South Shields (Mr. Ede) and Clay Cross on 3rd November, to which I have nothing to add.

Mr. Henderson

Is it not the fact that the Prime Minister in the written reply merely expressed the hope that misunderstandings may have been removed, and, in fact did not the Foreign Secretary dissociate the British Government from the remarks made by the Chancellor of the Duchy?

The Prime Minister

As to the reference which the hon. Member makes to the speech of the Foreign Secretary, that may be, but the fact remains that I did express the hope that misunderstandings had been cleared up, and I have no reason to suppose that they have not.

Mr. Henderson

In view of the unsatisfactory answer of the Prime Minister, I beg to give notice that I shall raise this matter on the Adjournment.
