§ 38. Mr. McEnteeasked the Home Secretary whether he is aware that many police houses in county areas are in a very bad condition of repair and that they are insanitary and unhealthy; and will he give early attention to the condition of such houses with a view to making them reasonably habitable and healthy?
§ Sir S. HoareThe primary responsibility in this matter rests with the various county police authorities. From time to 366 time a few cases have been brought to the notice of the Home Office, usually by His Majesty's inspectors of constabulary, of unsatisfactory houses being kept in occupation, and suitable representations have been made to the authorities concerned. As, however, I indicated in my reply of 29th July last to the hon. Member, the police authorities generally are fully alive to the importance of maintaining a proper standard, and much valuable work has been done of recent years by a steadily increasing number of the authorities to improve the police housing conditions in their areas.
§ Mr. McEnteeWill the Home Office make some representations to the authorities concerned in view of the fact that, although questions have been put from time to time, there is really no improvement in these houses?
§ Sir S. HoareI do not think that is the case, but if the hon. Member will sent me any particulars he has, I will consider them.
