HC Deb 03 November 1938 vol 340 c339
3. Mr. Malcolm MacMillan

asked the Minister of Labour what decision has been arrived at in regard to unemployment insurance of unemployed men on Unemployed Assistance Board allowances in the Isle of Lewis sent from the Employment Exchange to work at peat-cutting for one or two days who have been engaged in other insurable work and of those refusing peat-cutting on the above ground?

Mr. E. Brown

I assume that the hon. Member has in mind two cases which have occurred in Lewis in which men were decided not to be available for work after they had refused employment as peat cutters. In one case, after work of a different kind had been obtained, the decision was revised. In the other, no appeal was lodged and the decision stands, but, if the man concerned renews his application, the matter will be reconsidered in the light of any fresh facts.

Mr. MacMillan

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the people who did accept this employment did not receive the unemployment stamps, whereas those who foresaw they would not be covered by unemployment insurance and refused to work as peat cutters were penalised?

Mr. Brown

That is another point. If the hon. Member desires further information, perhaps he will communicate with me or put down a question.
