HC Deb 01 November 1938 vol 340 c27
54. Mr. Craven-Ellis

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer to what extent the Exchange Equalisation Fund lost gold following the recovery in France which has brought about the return to that country of much fugitive capital?

Sir J. Simon

I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply given on 5th October, 1938, to the hon. Member for East Birkenhead (Mr. White).

Mr. Craven-Ellis

Is my right hon. Friend not of opinion that if this country had been on the Gold Standard it would not have been possible for such a large amount of gold to be transferred?
