HC Deb 26 May 1938 vol 336 cc1395-6
Major Neven Spence (by Private Notice)

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland why the Herring Industry Board has fixed 14th June instead of 7th June as the starting date for herring fishing in Zetland in opposition to the wishes of the fishermen, curers and the German importers.

The Secretary of State for Scotland (Mr. Colville)

I am informed that the Herring Industry Board have fixed 14th June as the starting date for curing herring in Zetland. They have not, however, I understand, placed any restriction on fishing. I understand that an earlier date, for starting curing is desired by the local fishermen and curers, but that that desire is not shared by the industry in general in this country, or by the majority of the importers concerned. The fixing or curing dates is a matter within the jurisdiction of the Herring Industry Board, who reached the decision as to a commencing date after consideration of all the interests affected, and I am unable to interfere with their discretion.
