HC Deb 26 May 1938 vol 336 cc1385-6

The following Question stood upon the Order Paper:

57. Mr. Fleming

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is aware that Mrs. Elsie Hesse, a German Jewess, was convicted of attempting to avoid payment of Customs duties at Croydon airport; and if he has made a deportation order in this case?

Mr. Arthur Henderson

On a point of Order. May I draw your attention, Mr. Speaker, to the fact that the lady referred to in the question is described as a German Jewess. Is it not undesirable to refer to the religion of an individual when it may have the effect of creating racial prejudice?

Mr. Speaker

The hon. Member is quite right. I think it is undesirable.
