HC Deb 25 May 1938 vol 336 cc1215-6
73. Mr. R. Gibson

asked the Postmaster-General whether he can now state when the change to the automatic system of telephone exchange at Greenock will be put into operation; and what area will be covered by the change?

The Assistant Postmaster-General (Sir Walter Womersley)

The conversion to automatic working of the Greenock Exchange will, it is hoped, be completed in 1941. The scheme also provides for the conversion of the Gourock and Port Glasgow Exchanges, which will be effected at the same time.

Mr. Gibson

What has been the cause of the postponement of the projected date of the opening of the exchange?

Sir W. Womersley

There were difficulties in connection with the securing of the site. Those difficulties have now been got over, and the work is proceeding.
