HC Deb 25 May 1938 vol 336 c1195
36. Mr. Creech Jones

asked the Secretary of State for the colonies for what purpose the police in Mauritius are being trained in the use of arms and being equipped with rifles?

Mr. M. MacDonald

The object of the measures that have been taken is to increase the efficiency of the Mauritius police in the maintenance of public security.

Mr. Creech Jones

In view of the fact that Mauritius has been a British colony for generations, how does it suddenly become necessary that the police should be trained in military work and be armed? What local circumstances justify this departure from British tradition?

Mr. MacDonald

Far from being a departure from British tradition, the police are armed in the majority of Colonies.
