HC Deb 18 May 1938 vol 336 c401
45. Sir William Jenkins

asked the Minister for the Co-ordination of Defence whether he is taking any steps to make use of the steel works and tin industry in West Wales, from Port Talbot to Llanelly, which have closed down owing to depression, for the purpose of producing material for Defence purposes?

The Minister for the Co-ordination of Defence (Sir Thomas Inskip)

I am advised that no shortage of tin plate is being experienced in relation to the Defence programme and that the production of steel also is at present ample for the needs of the programme. In these circumstances it is unnecessary so far as Defence purposes are concerned to take any steps to increase present supplies.
