HC Deb 12 May 1938 vol 335 cc1695-6
26. Mr. G. Strauss

asked the Home Secretary whether all employés under the authority of the Receiver's Department of the Metropolitan Police are paid not less than the trade union rates appropriate to the class of labour appertaining in the district; and, if not, whether he will take steps to secure the payment of such rates?

Sir S. Hoare

I am informed by the Receiver that he is not aware of any case in which a person employed in his Department receives less than the appropriate trade union rate. If, however, the hon. Member knows of any such case, I shall be happy to cause inquiry to be made.

Mr. Strauss

Is the rate less than 48s. per week?

28. Mr. Strauss

asked the Home Secretary whether he will ask the Receiver for the Metropolitan Police to inquire into the adequacy of the wages, 48s. to 52s., paid to full-time male employés in the surveyors' branch of his Department?

Sir S. Hoare

These rates which are paid to male cleaners at police stations were introduced only last January. They were fixed after full inquiry and are based on the rates paid for comparable work in Government Departments and by outside employers of similar labour. The question of their adequacy will be kept under review.

Mr. McEntee

Are they being paid in accordance with a trade union scale?

Sir S. Hoare

I am informed that they are.

Mr. McEntee

On what scale are they paid? My information is entirely different.

Sir S. Hoare

If the hon. Gentleman will send me any information of that kind I shall be very glad to consider it.

Mr. McEntee

If the right hon. Gentleman says they are paid in accordance with a scale surely he can say with what scale their pay is in accordance?
