HC Deb 11 May 1938 vol 335 cc1556-7
7. Mr. Day

asked the Prime Minister particulars of any agreed variation in which consent has been given for the alteration of Article 18 of the convention relating to the regime of the Straits which was signed at Lausanne on 24th July, 1923?

Mr. Butler

The guarantee contained in Article 18 of the Straits Convention signed at Lausanne on 24th July, 1923, automatically lapsed when that convention was replaced by the convention signed at Montreux on 20th July, 1936, which brought the demilitarisation of the Straits to an end.

Mr. Day

Can the Minister say whether the Turkish Government are satisfied with the arrangements made with His Majesty's Government on this subject?

Mr. Butler

As far as I know they are satisfied.
