HC Deb 05 May 1938 vol 335 c1001
3. Mr. Graham White

asked the Minister of Labour whether his attention has been called to the proposals for the amalgamation of sugar-refining undertakings in Liverpool and to the unemployment which will arise therefrom; and what action he proposes to take in the matter?

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

I have no information beyond the statements which have appeared in the Press. The hon. Member will appreciate that my right hon. Friend has no power to intervene, but I notice that it was also stated that in order to mitigate the hardship involved in this transfer, arrangements had been made by the two companies to set aside a very substantial sum as a fund to provide adequate pensions for the older employés and cash compensations for the younger men.
