HC Deb 05 May 1938 vol 335 cc1012-3
24. Mr. Day

asked the Home Secretary whether he proposes to make any further modification in the present law in respect of the trial on a capital charge of a woman who is about to become a mother?

Sir S. Hoare

This whole matter was reviewed by Parliament in 1931 when the Sentence of Death (Expectant Mothers) Act was passed. I am not aware that this Act requires any modification.

Mr. Day

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether this special point has been considered, seeing that his predecessor said that he would give special consideration to it?

Sir S. Hoare

The special point was considered. An Act of Parliament was passed by agreement by the whole House in 1931, and I have received no criticism of the operation of the Act.
