HC Deb 05 May 1938 vol 335 cc1025-6
64. Mr. Kennedy

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury the number of old age pensioners in England and Scotland, respectively, now receiving Poor Law relief; and whether he has now considered the desirability of an increase of pension, in view of the ever increasing cost of living?

Lieut.-Colonel Colville

On the latest available dates, the numbers of old age pensioners receiving public assistance was 230,652 in England and Wales and 40,241 in Scotland. In reply to the second half of the question, I would refer the right hon. Gentleman to the answer I gave him on 24th March last, but I would point out to him that in recent months there has been some fall in the cost of living figure.
