HC Deb 03 May 1938 vol 335 c672
1. Mr. Mander

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether he has any statement to make with reference to the negotiations between the German delegation of industrialists and the Union Government of South Africa, whereby barter arrangements have been entered into which will have a detrimental effect on British trade; and what action is being taken in the matter?

The Secretary of State for the Colonies (Mr. Ormsby-Gore)

I have been asked to reply to this question, in the absence of my right hon. Friend. My right hon. Friend understands that trade between the Union of South Africa and Germany is at present governed by a payments agreement concluded in 1937, under which private barter arrangements are not allowed. He has no information as to any recent arrangements having been made which affect the position.

Mr. Mander

If I bring to the attention of the right hon. Gentleman certain facts in connection with this matter, will he be good enough to make further inquiries?

Mr. Ormsby-Gore

I will convey that to my right hon. Friend.
