HC Deb 02 May 1938 vol 335 c494
8. Mr. Thorne

asked the Prime Minister whether the £8,000,000 outstanding debt of Austria to this country, repayable by instalment and interest, has now been accepted as an obligation by Germany?

The Prime Minister

I am in communication with the German Government on the subject, and am unable to make any statement at present.

Mr. Thorne

If I put down a question next Monday, will the Prime Minister be able to give a reply?

The Prime Minister

It does not depend upon me, but upon the German Government.

Mr. Thorne

I take it that the right hon. Gentleman will at once, or through his representative, put himself into touch with the German Government on the matter?

The Prime Minister

I have said that I have done so already.

Captain Cazalet

Is the British Government's guarantee of one loan to Austria and assent to another in any way affected by what has taken place?

The Prime Minister

No, not in the least.
