HC Deb 24 March 1938 vol 333 cc1360-1
17. Mr. Day

asked the Home Secretary what is the normal average number of boys allotted to each house-master in the Borstal institutions; and what is the present number of inmates per house?

Sir S. Hoare

The conditions are different in the seven different institutions. In the five institutions which are organised on a house basis, the average number of inmates allotted to each housemaster is 36, and the average number of inmates per house is 65.

Mr. Day

Has each house its own well-trained house-master?
